EndNote Tips

Today I attended a Endnote introduction lessons. Here are some useful tips.

How to input the author’s name?

The rule is put the surname/family first. If there are more than one author, input one author name, plus a space and enter a newline to put the other one.

If you want to show an organization in your bibliography, how to tell endnote do not format it as an author name?

For example, the organization name is Federal Police Office, if you put “Federal Police Office” in author entry, your bibliography will look like “Office, F. P.”. The reason is Endnote treats it as a person’s name. So you need to plus a comma after your organization name. In this case it should be  “Federal Police Office,”, then endnote will generate correct bibliography.

How to backup the endnote library?

We can save it as the compress one, so it contains only one file. It is easy to backup our own endnote library. BTW, we need only one library for the Phd study, use group to manage your reference library. From menu: click File->compress library

How to export endnote to BibTex?

Since I need to use latex to prepare for our thesis, the endnote is used as a tool to manage the papers. So we need to export the endnote library into BibTex which can be used with latex.

Here are the steps:

select the article you are going to cite in your paper.

Click File –>Export

Save as .txt file. choose BibTex Export as output style, then save.

You will have bibtex you want.
